Dust in your vacuum conveyor?

Posted on Friday 1 January 2010

Cleaning out a dusty vacuum conveyor is a messy job at the best of times, but dust from harmful food or pharmaceutical ingredients turns it into a risky job. But in Piab’s premium vacuum conveyor help is at hand and the solution is surprisingly simple – just wet the dust with water.

By wetting the dust, Piab's piFLOWp conveyor makes sure the working environment is safe. The wet dust will stay in place, ensuring it is not inhaled by staff when the conveyor is opened for cleaning or maintenance work. Dousing it with water makes the dust stay where it is until it can be removed safely.

Piab has added so called Wet-In-Place (WIP) spray nozzles to its popular piFLOWp vacuum conveyor. WIP nozzles are available for inclusion in new conveying systems and for retrofitting in existing systems. Together with extra air filters, the WIP nozzles ensure a safer working environment in food and pharmaceutical processing plants.

For maximum performance and coverage, and to make sure that as much material as possible is captured as quickly as possible, three spray nozzles are fitted to each conveyor. This also enables much of the dust assembled in the conveyor to be washed away pre-cleaning during the WIP spray procedure.

The piFLOWp conveyor for powder and bulk materials is designed to match the stringent demands for operational safety and hygiene within the food and pharmaceutical industries. This premium grade conveyor is made from materials that comply with the regulations of both US FDA and EU 1935/2004.

Piab's conveyors can be used to safely transport large volumes of powder/bulk materials, and their advanced technology will guarantee segregation-free conveying. Maximising the safety of the processing staff, piFLOWp is available in ATEX dust and gas approved designs, in which all plastic or rubber parts, including filters and seals, are made of antistatic nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR).
