Cutting the cost of absence

Posted on Friday 1 January 2010

HCML has created a new way to capture individual sick-leave cases before they turn into long-term absence management headaches and believes its MAP-Lite professional resolution service could save the UK £56 billion in lost time, productivity and management costs.

Pete Clark, a qualified OT and HCML’s corporate and public sector head, says it can cut absence rates by two thirds and annual absence costs by £170,000 in a 1000 workforce.

On day one of absence, staff report to HCML for an immediate clinical assessment. HCML’s independent report is used to build a bespoke plan for a quick, safe return to work, listing steps for staff and manager and identifying factors that could prolong absence.

Clark said: “We can deliver cost savings of 62% by early intervention. Line managers hesitate to call absent staff on day one or discuss health, which can mean neglect for staff needing help with stress, anxiety or physical problems.

“Meanwhile, occupational health reports may arrive late and offer no direction on what to do next and absences can escalate.

“We give professional, nurturing contact on day one.  Staff can agree clear goals with experts with clinical knowledge.”

According to The Institute for Employment Studies between 2 and 16% of annual salary bills may be spent on absence.
