Operator protection system enhances inherent safety

Posted on Friday 1 January 2010

As an IPAF training school, Niftylift fully supports the need for all operators to be trained and familiarised with the operation of any powered access platform, as well as risk assessing the task to be performed and its environment.

In addition to this Niftylift has always believed that a work
platform’s inherent safety systems should be constantly reviewed to
ensure that they offer the safest environment for the operator to work
within. Over the years the company has introduced various safety
features to its work platforms notably the Sustained Involuntary
Operator Protection System (SiOPS).

SiOPS is integral to the cage and equipped to detect any significant
load on the platform’s control console. If a load is detected the foot
pedal and enable button are immediately deactivated, temporarily
interrupting all machine movement. As SiOPS reacts instantly it removes
the operator’s reaction time, which reduces the potential for trap
injury giving the operator a  ‘second chance’ to consider how to recover
their situation safely and then re-activate control of the work
platform.
