Making the warehouse a safer place

Posted on Friday 1 January 2010

Manufacturer and supplier of safety and warning products ECCO Group Europe suggests safety in the warehouse can be improved through a number of measures including reverse alarms, warning amber beacons and worklamps to ensure workers are aware of moving vehicles.

Beacons
There are a number of amber warning beacons available for this specialist market including xenon and LED versions. ECCO recommends LED beacons for electrically powered forklifts because they have a lower current draw than standard types, therefore allowing longer forklift operation. In addition, LED beacons have excellent light output and should remain maintenance free for many years, eliminating the problem of bulb failure (and therefore reducing danger) whilst the vehicle is in operation.

Reversing alarms
ECCO has been producing reversing alarms for more than 40 years including alarms for all types of vehicles, from forklifts, vans, HGVs right through to giant earth movers.

The range of “Smart Alarms” is ideal for material handling applications, especially in a busy warehouse where multiple movements are taking place. This is because “Smart Alarms” constantly measure ambient noise and adjust their sound levels to 5 dB(A) above, creating a noise level that is safe without being annoying or creating “noise pollution” in the working environment. “Smart Alarms” eliminate the need for constant manual adjustment and help to prevent deliberate disconnection. They are compact and have universal mounting brackets to enable them to be fitted to any forklift.

Every warehouse environment can be different and therefore ECCO has produced a free app to help specify the reversing alarm best suited to each individual application.

Available for iPad, iPhone and Android, the app enables the user to measure the ambient noise level using a built-in decibel meter. Once sampled, the app then quickly suggests appropriate model numbers. With a section dedicated to Material Handling, this is an ideal tool to use in a warehouse. The app also provides full product descriptions, technical specifications, product drawings, data sheets and full installation instructions. Users can even listen to sound samples of each model.

Worklamps
ECCO also offers an extensive range of worklamps ideal for material handling operations. The latest LED versions are extremely compact and easy to fit. They can provide almost “daylight” working conditions where poor lighting or working on a loading bay at night may be a problem.

With up to 50,000 working hours of service life there is no need to fit them in accessible places because there are no bulbs to change. Light output is up to 3,000 Lumens, ensuring safe and secure performance.
