Zero RIDDOR achievement

Posted on Friday 1 January 2010

Dedicated transport systems specialists Ground Transport Systems (GTS), Thales UK have been driving a proactive safety leadership and culture programme over the past 23 months, focused on changing behaviours and engaging the entire business resulting in zero Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) for 2013.

The GTS ‘Safety leadership and culture journey’ began in January 2012 with the objective of creating a visible safety strategy to drive best practice including improving  performance measurements and controls applicable to every hazard from coffee spillage in the office to signalling diversions to avoid a derailment. Key to successful implementation has been ensuring safety ‘ownership’ across three business tiers: The executive team managers and frontline worksite staff supported by a team of HSE professionals.

GTS has concentrated on promoting a fair, blame-free culture to encourage transparent reporting; establishing leading indicator metrics and tightening up site working including supervision and contractor selection and management. GTS has strengthened all protocols with regards to training on safety fundamentals and individuals duty of care. Early identification, interception and effective monitoring of potential hazards have all been the key to the success. The number reported in 2012 stood at 532.
