Smart asbestos solution

Posted on Friday 1 January 2010

In 2002, energy generation at Bradwell Nuclear Power Station ceased after 40 years of running. The plant had provided power to the Chelmsford, Colchester and Southend villages via its 30 hectare site.

The site has now undergone its decommissioning programme, with Bradwell becoming the first UK reactor site to enter care and maintenance (C&M) in 2015.

Actavo Industrial Solutions (formerly Deborah Services Industrial Services) was commissioned to provide both environmental and access support for the de-planting of four boiler rooms at Magnox Bradwell.

Holding an Asbestos Removal License and continuously working closely with the Health and Safety Executive to keep up to date with legislative requirements, placed Actavo in the best position for solving the sensitive nature of safely removing the asbestos at Bradwell.

A Wrap & Cut approach to remove both pipes and asbestos together was adopted, to avoid the more dangerous disjointed processes, to save time and reduce asbestos traces in surrounding locations.

The 550 cubic metres of asbestos waste that was generated was removed from site in fully enclosed lockable waste skips and transported to a licensed landfill site for final disposal.
