Coldstore guidance

Posted on Friday 1 January 2010

To promote good practice for working at height in ambient or cold store warehouses, the Food Storage and Distribution Federation (FSDF) and the British Frozen Food Federation have produced Guidance Note PM28 (Fourth Edition).

Endorsed by the Health & Safety Executive, the guidance covers the use of non-integrated working platforms and forklift trucks within the cold store environment.

The PM28 guidance is for users, suppliers and hirers of non-integrated working platforms. Although normally used to transport materials, working platforms can also be used to allow people to work at height. Drawing upon the extensive experience of their members, the FSDF and the BFFF have helped compile guidance that advises on appropriate platform and truck combinations. Items addressed include truck and platform compatibility, securing methods, moving parts access and communication between platform user and operator.
