How can gulls be discouraged?

Gulls are likely to be a big issue once more and have become a familiar topic for the media and the businesses and people impacted by gull behaviour.

Gulls are expert scavengers and the urban landscape is ideal scavenging. The rooftops of homes and industrial units are ideal as nesting sites, so what can be done?

To control gulls you need to:

• Restrict access to food sources such as litter and ensure bins are secured
• If possible restrict access to roofing and potential areas using gull proofing such as spiking or netting
• Use a deterrent such as falconry, in our experience kites and models are ineffective deterrents
• Implement an egg and best removal programme which may be possible if the gull nesting season has commenced.

Whatever you do you need to remember that all UK birds are protected by law. You should seek advice and guidance from a recognised ornithology consultant with a proven track record to ensure your gull control is licenced and legal.
