Don’t procrastinate on problem pigeons
Feral pigeons have had some bad press. While they may not deserve the ‘rats with wings’ moniker, their nesting activity and subsequent build-up of droppings still poses significant health and safety risks.
NBC Environmental recently completed a job to clear a colony that had been established for just two years, but generated enough guano to fill 50 bin bags. As well as being unsightly and a slip risk, pigeon waste carries bacteria which can cause numerous infectious diseases. This is particularly problematic if the birds are nesting in proximity to air conditioning units.
All UK birds – including pigeons – are protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. The legal nuances make control highly complex and any infringement can result in a heavy fine. From this perspective it’s sensible to work with an experienced environmental consultant, rather than a pest controller.
Pigeons breed year-round, but peak season is in the spring and summer so now is the best possible time to proof buildings to discourage nesting for the long-term. Also bear in mind, if you think the nesting pigeons are bad, then you haven’t experienced gulls yet!
