Aon survey shows rising mental health issues

Posted on Friday 1 January 2010

Aon Employee Benefits’ 2018 Survey has shown a sharp increase in the number of employers reporting employee stress and mental health-related illnesses – from 55 per cent last year to 68 per cent in 2018.

However, employers are now investing more in proactive initiatives including mental health first aid training, to teach managers and colleagues how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental health issues. Last year just 36 per cent of organisations were investing in this sort of education, which has risen to 42 per cent this year.

Other findings of the survey included the fact that more organisations are providing health and wellbeing apps (48 per cent) and that the use of virtual GP services has risen from 16 per cent last year to 27 per cent in 2018.

Commenting on the survey Mark Witte, head of healthcare and risk consulting of Aon Employee Benefits, said:

“If there was one defining theme in 2017, it was the growth of and increased focus on corporate wellbeing programmes across several key areas. We now see 84 per cent of employers saying that they consider themselves responsible for influencing their employees’ health behaviours."
