Action urged to prevent obesity

With the number of obese and overweight people predicted to jump to 2.7 billion adults worldwide by 2025, Tanita Europe has urged European governments to provide earlier intervention to help people help themselves before treatment becomes necessary.

“Governments and health service providers must take urgent action to prevent obesity, which untreated can lead to heart disease, diabetes, liver disease and many types of cancer,” said Jan Alderlieste, Tanita chief operations officer in Europe, the Middle East and Russia. With countries around Europe marking World Obesity Day on 11th October, Alderlieste said it was unacceptable that the annual global medical bill for treating the consequences of obesity is expected to reach US$1.2 trillion per year by 2025.

Tanita Europe, a leader in precision electronic scales, believes that early intervention to prevent weight gain is the principal key to reducing the need for obesity treatment. The company also says governments must invest more in education about how to create healthy leisure and food environments to encourage people to protect their health.

Tanita research has shown that fat monitoring is a far better guide to health than weight alone because it reveals the kilos made of fat and the kilos made of lean tissue. A person measuring their changes in body fat will find it helps them to make healthy changes to their lifestyle – benefitting the whole family,

Tanita is the innovator of what is described as the world’s first integrated body composition analyser for professional markets. Looking beyond scales to products that enable consumers to monitor their own health, Tanita’s goal is to help people enjoy healthier lives.
