Construction safety fines increased

Posted on Friday 1 January 2010

Since the new sentencing guidelines were introduced in February 2016 construction companies have been fined in excess of £8million for safety offences, with £5.6m arising from three prosecutions alone.

Not only are the fines for health and safety breaches soaring but directors of two construction companies have also received significant custodial sentences.

These fines are unlimited and proportional to the size of your company: Micro – Turnover not more than £2m; Small – Turnover between £2m and £10m; Medium – Turnover between £10m and £50m; Large – Turnover over £50m.

As an example, a large company could face fines of up to £10 million for the most serious health and safety offences whilst corporate manslaughter fines could reach up to £20m.

It is clear that construction companies will need to work ever harder to control the risks from incidents, accidents and ill health and to protect their employees and others from reasonably foreseeable harm, but THSP Risk Management is here to help.

If you have any questions on the changes or would like some more information on THSP's health and safety consultancy services and how it can help reduce costly accidents on your sites with its site visits, call 03456 122 144.
