Cyclist safety and awareness

Posted on Friday 1 January 2010

The safety of cyclists on Britain’s roads has become a hot topic in recent months. Sadly this is due to the rise of accidents and fatalities involving riders.

CLOCS (Construction Logistics and Cyclist Safety) calculated that between January 2008 and July 2015 around 99 cyclists were killed by HGVs in London alone; and that between 2008 and 2013, 60% of the entire UK’s cyclist fatalities involved a goods vehicle.

Companies that utilise logistics vehicles need to be more aware of cyclists, their safety and the impact that accidents involving them have on an organisation.

One quarter of cyclist vs. large vehicle accidents are caused by driving ‘too close’ to one another, suggest that greater visibility and awareness of each other would help prevent quite so many incidents.

Venta Global says that it feels passionately about the safety of cyclists and HGV drivers. As a result, they have produced several designs to help drivers to manoeuvre more safely in congested and highly populated areas.

The LED side marker light (SM4701DI) has an integral side direction indicator that not only alerts the cyclist to the vehicles size and whereabouts – but also to its future directional intentions. By using this style of light, a cyclist travelling alongside the vehicle has just as much warning as a cyclist travelling behind the vehicle.

Many companies are already utilising this innovation, including large supermarket home delivery vehicles.
