Engineering group enhances safety
One of Scotland’s leading engineering groups has announced a company-wide commitment to enhanced safety standards. AJT Engineering has upgraded its 5S culture* to 6S – adding in safety as a key element.
The initiative is being carried out across the firm’s four divisions in Aberdeen, Port Glasgow and East Kilbride.
Over 40 members of AJT’s 111-strong workforce are participating in the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) “Working Safely” course.
Ronnie Brown, health, safety and quality (HSQ) manager, said: “Following the successful implementation of 5S at our Altens facility in Aberdeen, we’ve taken the decision to roll out 6S across all four facilities – adding safety to the other 5 elements."
“As part of the safety roll-out we analyse our performance in key safety areas that are critical to our operations, with initial focus on safe use of work equipment, housekeeping standards, high-risk elements that are specific to each of the facilities, and safety culture.”
The culture element considers the way people behave, and to what extent they participate in the day to day running of the safety management system, their attitudes towards safety controls, PPE, observation reporting and also their taking ownership of safety issues.
Mr Brown added: “The IOSH Managing Safely course aligns perfectly with our 6S initiative and has provided our employees with the knowledge and tools they require to work, think and act safely.”
