Evacuation app

Posted on Friday 1 January 2010

“‘Does anyone know I am here?’ is the single biggest quote in our consultation with disabled people when asked about evacuation plans in buildings they are visiting,” Mike Elkerton, CEO of Access & Evac-U-8, said.

Emergency evacuation relies on who needs evacuating and how they are evacuated.

Access & Evac-U-8 have created a smart phone ‘App’ (DirectMii/ Evacu8Me) that is simple to use and is designed to improve internal spacial orienteering and evacuations plans for disabled and non disabled people.

"A lot of people view their phone as a communication security blanket', so it was natural to have internal floor plans, pictorial routes and evacuation instruction on the phone for all to access", the company said.

Mike Elkerton added: "I believe in a fair and open society and that disabled and non-disabled people have the right to be considered in the same manner and respect. This also includes emergency evacuation from a building. Our app is a giant leap forward in that direction that promotes inclusion, diversity and has a positive social impact."
