Getting a handle on hygiene

Posted on Friday 1 January 2010

NHS Grampian has become the first hospital in Scotland to trial an innovative new hand hygiene product, the Pure Hold Hygiene Handle which was developed in conjunction with NHS Infection Prevention specialists.

The Hygiene Handle is a door handle that dispenses sanitising hand gel directly onto the users hand when they open the door. In contrast with current systems which encourage people to “opt in” to hand hygiene controls, the Hygiene Handle approach reverses the decision so that everyone complies unless they have a good reason to “opt out”. Independent tests have shown the Hygiene Handle surface to be 98.5% cleaner than standard hospital door handles.
