Hard hat illumination

Posted on Friday 1 January 2010

Visibility is critical when there are vehicles operating on site. In 2015/16, there were 27 fatalities in the workplace caused by victims being struck by moving vehicles – 20% of all workplace fatalities (HSE statistics).

Poor visibility makes it much harder for vehicle operators to spot colleagues. The human eye responds best to bright and contrasting objects: enhancing the contrast between an employee and their environment allows drivers to see them sooner and more easily.

High visibility clothing, including vests, jackets and trousers, should always be worn in low light conditions and must be regularly cleaned to keep them effective. However, visibility doesn't have to be confined to below the shoulders: hard hat illumination adds another layer of safety for the worker. Employees may sometimes be partially obscured to drivers perhaps behind equipment – hard hat illumination adds extra visibility at the most observable point: the head.

Visilite from the hard hat experts at JSP does exactly that. Available from Enfield Safety, the hard hat illumination system increases worker visibility without dazzling colleagues. During rigorous testing, Visilite remained visible for up to 50 metres and can also withstand wet weather and conditions between -10 and +50 degress celsius. These simple but potentially life-saving devices can be fitted to the range of EVO 2/3/4/5 helmets.
