Measuring safety culture

Posted on Friday 1 January 2010

A good safety culture is important as it has a direct impact on the safety of employees, contractors and the public. As a health & safety professional within a business, it is more than likely that you are already convinced that a positive safety culture is good for your business. But do you know what the culture within your business actually is?

Based on HSE’s original, the Health & Safety Laboratory’s (HSL) innovative Safety Climate Tool provides a robust measure of an organisation’s culture. It has been scientifically proven to help companies make improvements to their safety culture. The Tool has been used successfully by hundreds of companies across industrial sectors and was mandatory for all contractors in the London Olympics 2012 ‘Big Build’.
Increasingly, multinational companies are choosing to use the SCT to measure the safety culture of their workforce outside the UK. To facilitate this demand, the Tool is now available in several languages.
To help managers make the case for culture in their organisation, HSL provides a new free White Paper to help professionals to make the case for culture in their organisation.
