The bigger picture of risk assessment

Posted on Thursday 25 January 2024

EVERY TRAINING course or workshop delivered by Safety Rocks is tailored to the specific needs of the organisation for which it has been requested. However, sometimes real-life situations from other sectors can be really important in providing a bigger-picture point of view.

A great example is a recent series of risk assessment workshops Safety Rocks ran for one of its longstanding partner clients, Birmingham Airport Fire and Rescue Service.

When discussing how to assess risk, the Safety Rocks team referenced the 1998 Leicester bakery incident, in which two men died when they were asked to fix an oven that had not been allowed to cool properly.

The bakery and some of its senior staff were prosecuted and fined considerable sums of money because the fatalities were entirely preventable, had anyone stopped to identify the risks involved in the procedure. While this incident occurred in a manufacturing sector, the risk assessment process is entirely relevant to any partner or client’s work environment
