View vehicle safety in a new light

Posted on Friday 1 January 2010

Grundon, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of integrated waste management and environmental solutions, has fitted a new lighting system to its vehicle fleet for improved visibility during night time work.

Designed and supplied by Labcraft, the Banksman light is positioned on each side of the chassis and produces a bright carpet of light around the vehicle when reverse gear is engaged.

“So far we’ve fitted the Banksman to 130 trade-waste vehicles and front-end loaders,” said regional operations manager Anthony Tattersall. “They operate at around 100 locations per day and often in poor light or darkness, where they are reversing up to 70% of the time. Our objective therefore was to find a solution which would enable drivers to see as clearly as possible and thus reduce accident risk.”

To this end, the Banksman projects a white light at a 90-degree angle from the vehicle sides onto the surrounding area and illuminates up to 30 square metres. Plus, the high-intensity Cree LED lamp is waterproof, hard wearing and guaranteed by Labcraft for 5 years.

“The ROI is a no-brainer,” added Anthony. “This degree of close-quarter vision produced by just two lights on each vehicle not only improves safety but also, will reduce downtime and minimise repair costs going forward. Also, the system is easy and quick to retrofit which again means minimum time off the road.”
